Match Play

It is played by holes. The winner of the hole is the one who has done it in fewer strokes than his opponent. The score is kept by adding up the holes won and subtracting those lost and it is usually said that a player is so many up or so many down.

The match is over when a competitor has won more holes than there are holes left in the round. (e.g. 4/3).

Medal Play

Everyone plays against everyone else.
It is the game by strokes.

The winner is the player who completes the round in the fewest number of strokes.

Stableford

Playing formula in which each hole is scored in relation to par:

This is the only formula in which the highest score wins.
This game can be played with handicap or scratch.
